Director, Contracts and Grants, Office of Sponsored Research

Overview

The Contracts and Grants Director for the Office of Sponsored Research has responsibility for effective management and leadership of key contracts and grants officers and managers and aspects of department operations including staff supervision; professional development; strategic planning; customer service; university and department sponsored project policy and procedure development, implementation, interpretation and communication; oversight of compliance issues; participation in development of university-wide and department staff training; and participation in design, development and implementation of department electronic systems; the Director serves in a management capacity providing expertise to the Office of Contracts and Grants staff by providing on-going guidance and assistance in resolving particularly complex or difficult situations through direct involvement and coaching; UCSF’s FY08 award volume for government and nonprofit contacts and grants was $933million; and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university plus 8 years directly related experience in contracts and grants and/or research administration; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience; sufficient management and professional experience, business acumen, judgment and integrity to effectively serve faculty and sponsors while protecting, representing and advancing the University’s best interests; demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience working within the research environment at a major university or institute; must have working knowledge of outside funding agency procedures and compliance requirements and regulations of sponsored research; knowledge of contracting and subcontracting practices; knowledge of legal distinctions between gifts, grants, knowledge of federal agency practices, regulations and policies; knowledge of conflicts of interest and intellectual property and cost accounting standards; expertise in grant application and preparation and research administration; evidence of leadership success in comparable situations; demonstrated supervisory skills; and ability; to work with a variety of public and the capacity to produce creative and innovative solutions and approaches to common problems; must have excellent interpersonal and organizations skills and the willingness to reach out to various stakeholders; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; word processing experience and the ability to work with a variety of database systems; spreadsheets; reporting systems and electronic document management systems.
Preferred Qualifications: MBA, JD, or equivalent degree in a related or scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience within research administration or contract negotiation/management; previous administrative experience working with grants/contracts required or similar complex administrative experience.
