Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The NC Collaboratory disseminates the policy and research expertise of the University for practical use by state and local government. A collaboratory is a center without walls in which researchers can perform their research without regard to physical location, interacting with colleagues, accessing instrumentation, sharing data and computational resources and accessing information in digital libraries in a collaborative manner.

Position Summary
The Senior Compliance Manager provides advanced leadership in support of the NC Collaboratory’s multidisciplinary research practice partnership initiatives within the Physical Sciences team to address complex issues for the benefit of the State.

This position manages research programs by monitoring compliance, ensuring the effective implementation of workflows, and serving as the first point of escalation for task management issues raised by other Program Managers. Reporting to the Research Director for Physical Sciences, the Senior Program Manager is primarily internal-facing and provides operational management for the execution of research programs.

The NC Collaboratory develops yearly research initiatives that target a pressing policy issue or problem of practice faced by policymakers and practitioners at the State and local level in North Carolina, and awards funding to support mutually beneficial partnerships between academic research teams and partners in local governments, community organizations, State agencies, and private industries. Recent examples of these existing Physical Science programs include the PFAS Testing Network, the High-Performance Computing initiative, and the Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) Takeback Program in partnership with the NC Office of the State Fire Marshal. The Senior Compliance Manager provides technical oversight these activities from planning through execution and performance monitoring.

Other duties include managing contract activities, recommending improvements to workflows, SOPs, forms, and templates, and optimizing documentation and data management practices for consistent program execution. The position also facilitates stakeholder engagement by coordinating input from researchers, program staff, and institutional partners.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s or Bachelor’s and 0-2 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Project or Program management experience, including tactical planning and scheduling of activities or resources. Experience with research administration software or related systems.
  • Experience with supervising, mentoring, and training individuals or groups.
  • Experience managing stakeholder relationships and collaborating with cross functional teams.
  • Experience in budgeting, financial oversight, and contract administration
  • Strong presentation abilities and clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Progressive experience in data analysis and problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Progressive experience in research administration, including mentoring and program or project management. Progressive experience in contracts and grants administration and management.
  • Research administration certification or equivalent credential preferred.
