Overview of Grants Manager

Purdue University Northwest is seeking a Grants Manager to join our Sponsored Programs department.  The primary purpose of this job is to independently service a portfolio of externally funded grants and ensure the university upholds the highest standards of fiscal compliance.  The grant portfolio value one manages may range between $5 million and $20 million annually.

Duties and Responsibilities of Grants Manager

  • Independently manage Purdue University Northwest (PNW) grants portfolio from set up to post-closing audit.
  • Ensure PNW policies and processes are aligned with Purdue-West Lafayette (PUWL), State, Federal, and sponsor requirements and policies.
  • Stay up to date with relevant grant-related developments and policies.
  • Work with PUWL Sponsored Program Services to establish new accounts.
  • Meet with Principal Investigators (PIs) and grant staff to guide them through the grant administration processes and policies.  
  • Approve expenses on grants. 
  • Manage payroll on grants and process effort reports.
  • Manage other research administration processes, such as Notices to Proceed, Prior Approvals, and No Cost Extensions.   
  • Monitor and clear overdrafts monthly.
  • Provide grant projections and monthly reports to PIs, project personnel, sponsors, and other parties as needed.
  • Ensure appropriate rates are used and that regulatory requirements are met throughout the project (IRB, risk management, IACUC, lab safety, etc.)
  • Prepare cost transfers as needed. 
  • Reconcile accounts before closing. 
  • Manage internal and external audits as needed. 
  • Manage all other research administration processes for PNW. 
  • Provide grant reports for PNW, PUWL, or sponsors as needed.
  • Hold research administration training sessions.

Education of Grants Manager

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Preferred degree in Business, Higher Education, Research Administration, Accounting, or a related field.

Experience of Grants Manager

  • Two years of finance or budget experience in research, higher education, medical, or related fields.

  • Certified Research Administrator preferred.
