Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years of grant proposal writing experience and grant award management. Proven track record of successful grant writing, proposal preparation and submission. At least 3 years of supervisory and team management experience. Experience with academic administration.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two (2) years of full-time experience drafting, reviewing, editing, and submitting grant/funding proposals. Master's degree or higher. Proven track record of successful proposal writing and submission to governmental/non-profit agencies. Certified Grants Management Specialist. Proven track record of successful sponsored research proposal writing, preparation, and submission with companies. Knowledge of and experience with RF/SUNY policies and procedures.
Brief Description:
The Assistant Director, Proposals (AD) will work with the Executive Director of Operations to establish the Economic Development (ED) proposals team. This team will manage the identification, review, drafting and proposal-related administrative duties, as well as assist Economic Development's centers and programs with their proposal-related objectives.
The successful candidate will: have strong leadership and supervisory skills; be self-directed and able to prioritize and organize their tasks and duties, as well as the priorities and tasks of their team; be able to function effectively and efficiently in carrying out their tasks and initiatives; be able to manage multiple priorities and meet hard deadlines; have the ability to work with diverse teams of faculty members, staff members, and students, and to support a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion; have the ability to establish partnering relationships with faculty and ED teams resulting in enhanced communication and proposal opportunities; and will have significant experience identifying, preparing and submitting research and development proposals.
Duties:
Build, Implement, and Manage Proposal Capability:
The AD will develop and administer this Economic Development's proposals team and the capability to secure funding through partnerships with SBU faculty, ED programs, industry, other institutions, and other external sources such as, for example, federal, state and non-profit organizations. The AD will liaise with senior executives both internally and externally to identify, prioritize, pursue, secure, and manage funding proposals. The AD will administer the process to support grant proposal design, writing, and execution. This includes, for example, creating workflows and operating procedures for ED's proposals team functions. As part of building core proposal capability, secure a standing constituency of internal and external partners. Hire, train and manage ED proposals team. This includes the supervision of direct reports. Oversee and manage direct reports, including recruiting, hiring, preparing performance objectives, workload distribution, personnel issues, completing and processing performance reviews and programs, creating job descriptions, approving time off, and professional development. Identify opportunities for team training and skills advancement. Provide direction and training for team members, coordinate projects and provide updates among the staff. Stay current with Performance Programs and Evaluations for all direct reports.
Proposal Alignment and Selection:
Define Funding Target Space and Identifying Funding Opportunities: With ED leadership team, for ED as a whole and for each applicable ED program and center, the AD will identify and define target funding opportunities and organizations that align with the mission and strategy of ED and/or the specific ED program/center. Opportunities identified will be tracked and reported to ED leadership and ED programs and centers for review and consideration.
Monitor Funding Trends: The AD will stay current on local, regional, NY State, national, and international funding trends with the objective of identifying where funding opportunities are available in each target area. Prioritize and Select Proposals: With the ED leadership team, review identified opportunities for further consideration and potential action.
The best opportunities will be selected and prioritized by the applicable ED program/center and/or leadership team with the AD providing administrative oversight and assistance in preparation. In this capacity, the AD will create a proposal preparation and submission process for ED. The AD will also review and make recommendations on funding opportunities identified or approved for further action by the ED leadership team and/or
ED Program/Center Director:
Manage, Write, Edit Proposals:
Under the guidance of the applicable ED program or center director and PI, and together with the project team, the AD will manage, write, review, and edit proposals, as well as assemble all required components for a successful submission including, but not limited to, the primary proposal, budgets, supporting documents, and letters of support. Each selected opportunity must have an ED leadership team point person and PI, as well as any necessary members of the project team, faculty or SBU administration required to submit a successful proposal. The AD will work with other offices on campus, as well as internal and external partners, to collect and submit a timely, proper, complete and responsive proposal. Individual funding opportunities will be led and ultimately determined by the appropriate subject matter experts across ED programs and centers (i.e., center and program directors), faculty, and partner organizations.
Submit Proposals:
The AD will be the primary point of contact for all ED proposal submissions. For example, the AD will engage and lead on any ED proposals with all related groups including, but not limited to, the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Proposal Development, University academic departments, ED programs and centers, and outside partners for the preparation and submission of ED funding proposals.
Other:
Support Executive Director and ED mission(s) by carrying out other related duties as assigned and as appropriate to grade/rank.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) to be offered for this position is noted below, it represents SBU's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Salary: $80,000-$110,000
