Job Description:
The UF Office of Federal Relations is recruiting for an Associate Director of Federal Relations. This position, based in Washington, D.C., is a critical part of UF's federal relations and advocacy team. The associate director will provide strategic research support under guidance and direction from the Assistant Vice President and consultation with the Associate Dean of Research in Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE). Among the major responsibilities are to provide issue area expertise and representation of the University of Florida's interests before the Executive branch agencies, industry representatives, and professional associations. The associate director develops strategies to advance UF's HWCOE interests and competitiveness at the federal level; builds and maintains relationships on campus with subject matter leadership and industry partners; establishes and maintain relationships with agency staff members, and professional societies; and supports strategies to engage university stakeholders, policymakers, and influencers to further government relations and related priorities. This position is a TEAMS time-limited position and is subject to renewal on an annual basis at the discretion of the university.
Job Description:
- Policy & Appropriations Analysis: Anticipate, monitor, and analyze federal policy, funding developments, legislation, and regulations, and provide regular reporting to internal stakeholders.
- Manage Federal Government Program Portfolio: Assist with advising senior college administrators on implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects related to a portfolio of federal government programs, policies, and funding opportunities.
- Enhance Federal Advocacy: Work collaboratively with UF internal stakeholders to advance UF HWCOE's interests and strengthen UF HWCOE visibility, relationships, and funding from federal sources.
- Advance Research Funding: Develop recommendations for the direction, goals, and implementation strategy to advance research funding for a portfolio of the HWCOE's federal interests. Build and maintain relationships across campus and with key federal executive branch officials, their staff members, related professional societies, and university-industry partners.
- Campus Engagement: Provide campus engagement support by creating resource guides for faculty and fostering faculty ties to program offices; provide visit support for faculty engagement with federal agencies; and coordinate campus engagements with federal research actors.
- Advocacy Network Development: Serve as a representative and ambassador for HWCOE in Washington, DC. Identify and assist with securing high-profile opportunities to reflect UF expertise, including agency panels, review boards, advisory committees, and expert witness testimony. Direct and develop the creation of public-facing advocacy materials, and social media to advance HWCOE's interests.
Expected Salary:
Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Master's degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree or higher in an appropriate area and/or four years of relevant experience at a university or research agency.
Detailed, hands-on experience with university-based research and federal research agencies, including policy development, budgeting, grants, and related activities.
Expertise in federal science policy.
Must be able to think strategically, analyze complex issues, work under limited supervision, exercise independent judgment, and work under pressure and tight timelines.
Must be able to build trusting, collaborative relationships across a wide range of internal and external audiences. Strong communication and organizational skills are required, as is attention to detail.
Ability to travel to Gainesville, Florida, as well as other occasional travel.
Experience working with or knowledge of the University of Florida, specifically, is a plus.
