About the Department:

The Office of Research Integrity and Assurance (ORIA) fosters and promotes state-of-the-art research and scholarship at Mason, providing resources that promote ethical and responsible conduct of research. The office provides services that ensure the Mason research and scholarship community is knowledgeable about and complies with federal and other relevant regulations that pertain to research and research integrity. ORIA also identifies compliance risks, communicates those risks to the Mason community, and monitors and investigates instances of noncompliance.

About the Position:

The Director, Research Integrity is responsible for the leadership and management of Mason’s research compliance programs in Conflict of Interest (COI) and in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). The Director chairs the University’s Conflict of Interest Committee, directs the day-to-day operations and processes of disclosure, review, and compliance monitoring, and is actively engaged in the development and implementation of related university policies and procedures pertaining to Conflict of Commitment and Organizational Conflict of Interest. In collaboration with the Associate Vice President, Research Integrity and Assurance, the Director plays a strategic role in building Mason’s RCR capacity, including developing resources and guidelines for researchers, education and outreach programs, formal educational opportunities, and community-building and practice-sharing activities. The Director serves as Deputy Research Integrity Officer, supporting the institutional official responsible for assessing allegations of research misconduct and overseeing and supporting inquiries and investigations. The Director also manages staff providing support to the above substantive areas.

Required Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience;
  • Experience in research compliance operations;
  • Experience working in a university or research institution;
  • Experience working with and protecting sensitive and confidential information; and
  • Master’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a university setting or research institution (typically 3+ years);
  • Experience in research compliance (typically 5+ years);
  • Experience managing RCR, COI, or other research compliance programs;
  • Experience with research misconduct investigations;
  • Experience reviewing conflict of interest disclosures and developing management plans to address potential conflicts;
  • Experience developing and delivering trainings, workshops, and/or courses on responsible conduct of research;
  • Experience performing RCR training program operations, including tracking completions and monitoring compliance with sponsor-specific training requirements;
  • Experience facilitating RCR case discussions and in developing case materials for discussion;
  • Experience evaluating staff and facilitating their professional development; and
  • Terminal degree in a related field.

Candidates must be:

  • A citizen of the United States;
  • A person who is a lawful permanent resident of the United States (a “Green Card” holder);
  • A person who is a “protected individual” as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a) (3); or
  • A person who is otherwise able to become generally eligible to receive unclassified technical data pursuant to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.
