Program Director, Research Finance for Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI)/Research Administration (RA)
The Program Director, Research Finance reports directly to the Director, Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) Finance and is responsible for acting as the top financial officer for the entire CTSI/Research Administration, which includes the Human Research Protection Program; Office of Sponsored Programs; Animal Welfare Program; Monitoring and Oversight; Central Administration; Education & Training; Clinical Research Unit; Office of Clinical Research; Interdisciplinary Research Programs; Research Center and Core Administration; Biomedical Informatics; and Research Faculty Compensation Programs. The Program Director, Research Finance will have broad, complex financial responsibilities involved with planning, developing, managing, analyzing, and reporting of financial data. The individual will lead a team of finance professionals responsible for a variety of accounts, including those that are institution-funded, industry-funded, federally-funded, endowments, research centers, and service cores, etc.
Bachelor’s degree required; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Master’s degree preferred.
5 - 7 years of financial and leadership experience, academic medical center environment preferred.
Grants and contracts coordination or management experience preferred.
Partner with the Director, WFUSM Finance and academic enterprise leadership to direct strategic planning processes, establish and achieve long range goals, and ensure the implementation of strategic business plans that are aligned with the institution’s vision, strategic plans, and goals.
Oversee, gather, compile, and prepare information for financial reports, budgets, analyses, and graphs for use by CTSI/RA and institutional leadership.
Lead business/financial plan development and analysis.
Develop, implement, and manage new and revised financial management systems, cost accounting systems, and financial policies and procedures for CTSI/RA operations.
Lead the planning, development, and coordination of complex financial analyses and reports, which may include financial statements, cost analyses, revenue and expense trends, financial projections, and statistical reports.
Work with Director, WFUSM Finance and academic enterprise leadership to prepare presentations of complex financial data.
Maintain effective liaison with internal departments and leadership for the purposes of identifying, managing, and analyzing financial information.
Lead operational and extramural budget processes, year-end close processes, and/or variance remediation as necessary for all CTSI/RA accounts.
Ensure compliance with internal/external financial regulations and reporting requirements.
Understand industry trends, networks with colleagues at other institutions, and evaluate the impact of operating initiatives on the financial health of CTSI/RA.
Lead efforts to prepare, edit, and proofread financial components of grants and contracts originating from CTSI/RA.
Provide technical advice and preparation assistance regarding financial aspects of extramural proposals, budgets, budget justifications, subcontracts, progress reports, indirect cost rates, fringe rates, etc. to investigators.
Develop resources to assist multiple investigators in the preparation and submission of complex extramural proposals and administrative awards.
Lead a team of finance professionals by providing technical advice, system training, and leadership support.
Oversee revenue and expense activity and the reconciliation for all CTSI extramural awards and operating accounts.
Responsible for the oversight of research center and service core activities (e.g. billing, account receivables, break-even analysis, resource management, etc.).
Manage research faculty compensation programs including: Research Excellence Awards, Bridge Funding, Early Career Salary Support, and Three-Year Salary Guarantee.
Oversee capital requests and the allocation of institutional resources.
Serve on CTSI/RA and/or institutional committees as assigned.
Manage effort distributions for all CTSI/RA staff and cross-funded personnel. Ensure effort certifications are accurate and submitted in a timely manner.
Responsible for handling human resources needs of the team, including reviewing and approving all hiring, exiting, compensation, and evaluation decisions within range of responsibilities. Implement institutional policies related to all phases of human resources activity, including recruitment, interviewing, compensation, benefits, orientation, performance evaluations, promotions, transfers, and terminations. Transmits and interprets institutional policies to direct and indirect reports. Ensures appropriate training of employees.
