Overview

The National Bureau of Economic Research is the nation’s leading non-profit economic research organization. The NBER coordinates research by more than 1,700 economics professors at leading colleges, universities and business schools throughout the United States.

Please note: This position is based in the NBER’s Cambridge, MA office and may be eligible for a combination of in person and remote work. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process.

The NBER is seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual to join our Research Administration team as a Program Manager. As a manager of sponsored and research projects, this individual will administer pre- and post-award aspects of a complex portfolio for affiliates whose funding sources include NIH and other federal and private sources. The Program Manager is responsible for the life cycle management of multiple research groups within the Program on Aging.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees preparation and submission of new, competing, and non-competing sponsored research proposals for the Program, and ensures that all required documentation and criteria are met for a successful submission.
  • Works with principal investigators to manage active grants, ensuring compliance with financial and regulatory requirements. Communicates effectively with program team, researchers, administrators, and sponsors to facilitate the research including responding to queries from Program Officers or grants management personnel.
  • Responsible for ensuring fiscal compliance on sponsored projects. This includes being familiar with approving expenditures, assigning cost centers, monitoring compliance with budgets, and identifying and investigating potential problem areas and proposing solutions. Makes recommendations for cost savings and rebudgeting, based on thorough understanding of study requirements and funding agency's regulations.
  • Interacts extensively with Accounting team to ensure compliance with all NBER, government, and funding agency policies.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all NBER and government regulations for research involving human subjects.
  • Performs all tasks particular to multi-component grants, such as P30 (Center) and P01 (Program Project), as assigned, including specialized annual progress reports; more detailed fund allocation and financial reporting; develops supplemental funding requests; manages inter-institutional coordination & subcontract arrangements; and manages the solicitation, submission, & tracking of individual pilot projects under the grants.
  • Serves as primary resource for PIs with respect to updates/changes in regulations and policies of grantor agencies.
  • Manages public website content for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates with data management personnel to support data acquisition and researcher access to sensitive data sets.
  • Coordinates with conference department staff to support grant funded research conferences.
  • Identifies and disseminates NIH funding opportunities
  • Works closely with Administrative Assistant providing training/mentoring of assistant to support their gradual transition to more independent grant management.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in federal grant support both pre- and post-award with extensive knowledge of PHS grant regulations and familiarity with Grants.gov and ASSIST.
  • Familiarity/experience with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements.
  • Experience with P30 Center and P01 Program Project grants is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, for interactions with all levels of staff, researchers, funding agency personnel, and administrative staff at collaborating institutions, and organizational skills including follow-through and tracking of long-term projects and daily tasks; must possess the ability to thrive in a busy, high-volume, and deadline driven team environment that requires initiative and coordination of multiple activities and the judgment and flexibility to reprioritize tasks as needed; and will have demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, and Internet applications and advanced experience in Excel. The ideal candidate will demonstrate willingness to take on new challenges and openness to change.
