innovation Research & Training (iRT) seeks full-time Business Manager who will manage a small business office that will include overseeing the bookkeeping and accounting related to Federal and nonfederal contracts, grants, and sales, as well as HR activities.

Job Description:  The person in this position will be responsible for the management of the business office including all sponsored programs, independent R & D, compliance with all rules and regulations associated with awards from multiple Federal and non-Federal funding agencies and types of awards.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage pre- and post-award grants and contracts
  • Create monthly company financial reports, and facilitate monthly project and company financial report meetings
  • Create companywide budgets for a fiscal year, as well as draft or review drafted budgets for inclusion in grant and contract proposals for accuracy and alignment with funding guidelines
  • Create monthly forecasting reports to include company financials, cross-project labor, and indirect cost expenses
  • Create presentations for special projects
  • Manage a direct staff of 2 employees who have financial, pre- and post-award grant and contract management, HR, sales, and general business responsibilities
  • Adhere to Federal and non-Federal rules, regulations, and policies related to accounting procedures, grants and contract award management, and employment practices
  • Implement new or revise current policies relevant to rules, regulations, and procedures, as they relate to financial operations of the company
  • Manage Accounts Payable staff including oversight of vendor/consultant payments, travel expense reports, and credit card charges
  • Manage Accounts Receivable staff including oversight of customer invoicing
  • Manage general ledger reconciliation and resolve discrepancies
  • Manage annual escheated checks reporting
  • Manage the preparation of materials for annual external financial audit, submission of taxes, and other governmental reports with an understanding of GAAP compliance
  • Prepare and submit company’s annual indirect cost proposals to its federal cognizant agency
  • Manage employees who are responsible for HR administrative duties
  • Assist managers with HR-related questions as they arise
  • Monitor all bank accounts
  • Manage office administration activities
  • Plan, implement, and manage the overall financial strategy of the company
  • Plan and manage all audit and internal control operations
  • Create company policies for great financial health
  • Assist with business funding decisions
  • Develop and execute strategies to hire, train, and retain skilled finance employees

Qualifications:  

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in accounting 
    • Minimum five years of experience
    • Accounting knowledge with an understanding of GAAP
    • Pre- and/or post-award Federal grants or contracts, or nonprofit grants management experience
    • Proficient in the following software applications: QuickBooks and MS Office products, including Excel
    • At least two years of direct management experience
    • Attentive to details
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Demonstrated initiative and self-motivation, ability to work independently, and ability to multitask in order to meet deadlines
    • Must be legally able to work in the U.S.  
  • Preferred:
    • Able to read and interpret the Federal Register or Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR)
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including a collaborative and proactive approach to working with both internal employees and external consultants
    • Strong problem-solving skills
