Operating within the Office of Research, the Associate Vice President for Research and Executive Director of Sponsored Programs (AVPR and ED SP) is responsible for leading all sponsored research activities in support of the research mission of the University. The AVPR and ED SP reports to the Vice President for Research and works closely and collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the highest level of service to the UAB research community. This is a rare opportunity for a seasoned research administrator with functional expertise, who has a track record of being a creative problem solver amid complexity. This leader will build a best-in-class operation that promotes the initiatives of UAB as a premier research university and academic health center, supports the rapid growth of UAB research, and builds a respected unit of valued subject matter experts who are recognized as a leading provider of authoritative, innovative, and high-value guidance on the conduct of sponsored research and other externally funded activities. In this critical role, the AVPR and ED SP will coalesce, stabilize, inspire, and grow the department’s diverse team of 50+ onsite and remote personnel, unify the work and culture of the department, and ensure efficient and effective operational systems and customer service. Additionally, the AVPR and ED SP will foster and promote the understanding that the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is a part of something greater – the UAB mission and the societal impact of the institution’s research.  This leader and the OSP are central to the growth of UAB research and are a part of the team that increases research and advances knowledge.

UAB’s robust research enterprise continues the most successful era of extramural research funding in its history, with a 50% increase over the past five record-setting fiscal years. FY22 awards totaled $715 million, ranking UAB 17th (top 4 percent) among public universities in federal R&D expenditures and 11th in NIH awards (top 4 percent).  All six of its health-related schools - Medicine, Public Health, Health Professions, Optometry, and Dentistry - rank in the top 15.
