Job Purpose:

Serve as subject matter expert and primary advisor on matters related to sponsored research program administration in accordance with Institute financial policies. Plan and manage associated financial support in the areas of budgets, accounting, reporting and grant and contract administration. Research environment within which the job functions will generally be characterized as extensive and complex. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing employee performance, providing feedback, and making pay recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate the sponsored research pre-award activities to include proposal development, formatting, review and submitting; budget, and fringe and overhead rates application; and database entry. 

  • Manage and coordinate the sponsored research pre-award activities to include proposal development, formatting, review and submitting; budget, and fringe and overhead rates application; and database entry. Coordinate all overdue deliverables and upcoming deliverables with faculty. 

  • Manage overall sponsored research related accounting operations including budget updates, financial reporting, Salary Planning and Distribution (SPD), sub agreements and financial forecasting. 

  • Confer with Schools Chairs, providing expert advice and counsel regarding unique and highly complex issues related to sponsored research plans, proposals and projects.   

  • Provide advice and counsel to faculty and financial staff regarding budget management and related issues. 

  • Plan, direct and monitor activities of financial staff responsible for sponsored research accounting. 

  • Liaise with management and staff within Office of Sponsored Programs and Grants and Contracts Accounting regarding sponsored research grants and contracts issues. 

  • May provide assistance to students, post docs, research faculty on fellowships and proposals. 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Education, Specialized Knowledge and Experience: 

Degrees required for this job: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience  

Years of experience required for this job: 5 to 7 years job related experience  

Specialized Skills:

Specialized skills required for this job: This job requires advanced professional knowledge of financial/accounting principles, practices and management as applied in sponsored research environment. Working knowledge of proposal development and related regulatory requirements is required as is use specialized applications and databases related to grants and contract administration. Also required are skills in planning and supervision, attention to detail, problem solving and communications. 

Degree(s) Preferred:  MBA or JD 

Certifications Preferred:   Certified Research Administrator (CRA) as granted through the Research Administrators Certification Council.
