Associate Director of Administration - Cancer Center

Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

The Associate Director for Administration at the UMass Cancer Center is an essential member of the senior leadership team responsible for the development, execution, and oversight of programmatic and operational activities and initiatives that will enable the Cancer Center to realize its mission, vision, and full potential. The goal of this position is to provide input and execute mission-driven strategic planning and evaluation efforts, with priority placed on implementing best practices and building supporting infrastructure, to allow the Cancer Center to successfully pursue its objective of achieving and maintaining National Cancer Institute designation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports Cancer Center leadership and faculty members through the development of administrative and research infrastructure and capabilities that facilitate research program and shared resource development, community outreach and engagement, cancer research training and education coordination, and plans to enhance diversity.
  • Drives collaborative strategic planning to further the mission of the Cancer Center in the basic, population and clinical/translational sciences with the ability to work effectively within a matrix organization as well as develop productive institutional and inter-agency relationships locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Develops and fosters inter-departmental and inter-institutional liaisons that enable the Cancer Center to coordinate cancer-related research and clinical activities with community outreach services.
  • Assists faculty leadership team in activities related to the Cancer Center’s external scientific advisory and community advisory boards.
  • Oversees and supervises the fiscal management of the Cancer Center, including financial planning, budget analysis, monthly/annual operational and financial performance metrics, business plans, strategy and other finance-related matters.  
  • Participates in the ongoing support and implementation of technology to support information systems for the Cancer Center. These systems are used to support basic, clinical/translational and population research activities, as well as administrative data and informatics required by the NCI P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG).
  • Provides expertise and assistance in developing successful large-scale grant submissions that are critical to the mission of the Cancer Center, including P-series, SPOREs, U-series and training (T32, R25 and K12) grants.
  • Creates and implements new initiatives for the Cancer Center.
  • Develops a team of professional employees which form the Administrative Core of the Cancer Center and provides administration oversight. Hires, advises, directly supervises and evaluates the performance of specified research project directors, coordinators, and staff. 
  • Convenes and provides overall direction to project teams and identifies and addresses problems that may adversely affect the performance of project work. Summarizes findings of data analysis and incorporates pertinent information into project presentations.
  • Supports the Cancer Center as it seeks NCI designation, including administrative assistance with the preparation and submission of the NCI P30 CCSG.
  • Participates in professional leadership activities and performs other duties as required.
