Overview

The Supervisor - Research Agreements (Industry/MTA/Federal & Foundation) assists the Director - Research Agreements in conducting and supervising the activities associated with business transactions involving or affecting MD Anderson, specifically including the development, negotiation, documentation, execution and modification of one or more of the following research agreement types: (a) sponsored/supported clinical and preclinical research agreements, consortium agreements, (b) material transfer agreements (MTAs), data transfer agreements, (c) federal and foundation contracts, grant agreements and subcontracts, and/or (d) other research related agreements as requested.

The Supervisor - Research Agreements (Industry/MTA/Federal & Foundation) also provides support and supervision in the Research Agreements group of the Intellectual Property Section of the Legal Services department, including support and supervision of one or more teams of Legal Contract Specialists and/or Senior Legal Contract Specialists responsible for negotiation and processing of the agreements identified in (a), (b), (c) and (d).

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors degree and seven years of business and research contract agreement experience, including one year of supervisory or management experience. Preferred competencies: Great communication skills (written & verbal); ability to lead with caring, motivation and support; ability to be diplomatic in communications and negotiations.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Legal Contract Research Professional

1. Reviews and/or supervises the review of research related agreements including sponsored/supported clinical and preclinical research agreements, consortium agreements, material transfer agreements (MTAs), data transfer agreements, and/or federal and foundation contracts, grant agreements and subcontracts, and other research related agreements as requested and assures that contractual language complies with applicable state and federal laws, UT System (Regents') rules, and Institutional standards and that the contracts are negotiated and finalized in accordance with UT System and Institutional requirements and procedures.

2. Provides support and supervision in the Research Agreements group of the Intellectual Property Section of the Legal Services department, including: (a) assisting the Director - Research Agreements in management and training of the Research Agreements group; and (b) support and supervision of one or more teams of Legal Contract Specialists and/or Senior Legal Contract Specialists responsible for negotiation and processing of sponsored/supported clinical and preclinical research agreements, consortium agreements, material transfer agreements (MTAs), data transfer agreements, and/or federal and foundation contracts, grant agreements and subcontracts, and other research related agreements. Such support and supervision includes training Legal Contract Specialists, providing guidance and support for Senior Legal Contract Specialists and addressing complex contractual questions that the Legal Contract Specialists and/or Senior Legal Contract Specialists are not able to resolve on their own.

3. Maintains up-to-date and accurate records and reports of research contracts processed, and monitors research agreement metrics for one or more teams of Legal Contract Specialists and/or Senior Legal Contract Specialists and ensures a balanced work load for one or more teams of Legal Contract Specialists and/or Senior Legal Contract Specialists. Tracks the research agreement process through applicable institutional databases and systems and communicates negotiation status in a proactive, timely and accurate manner.

4. Performs all functions of a legal research contract supervisor as directed by the Director - Research Agreements, and in the absence of that individual, by the Senior Legal Officer - IP/ Research, including communication with faculty and staff concerning MD Anderson's research related transactions, including review, analysis, and negotiation of agreements as appropriate.

5. Provides guidance and responds to requests from MD Anderson faculty and staff related to research related agreements, processing, and administrative issues in a timely manner.

6. Assists the Director - Research Agreements and the Senior Legal Officer - IP/Research with process improvement related to research related agreement negotiation, processing, and tracking.
