Manager, Grants/Contract Accounting (Post-Award)

The Manager, Grants/Contract Accounting is a responsible and detail-oriented individual. This role will aid in defining quality standards for the research accounting department. Regularly reviews compliance standards. Contributes in establishing departmental operating policies and procedures. They will be involved in the operations of post-award administration of research grant and gift funds.

The Manager, Grants/Contract Accounting reports directly to the President & CEO, supervises the work of the Research Administration Coordinator, and interfaces with other HMRI staff members. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Primary duties include ongoing monitoring of fund statements, resolution of accounting problems; and functioning as the liaison to grantor agencies and subcontracting institutions.
  • Oversees implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Participates in post-award management, with responsibility for direct research expenditures funded by external grants and/or gifts, and institute-funded direct costs and expenses funded by unrestricted donations.
  • Oversees the expensing in indirect costs on grants.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, accounting or business-related degree preferred. 
  • Requires five plus years in post-award research administration and/or related accounting or finance experience and three plus years’ experience as a supervisor or lead.   
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP 
  • Working knowledge of financial preparation, not-for-profit reporting, budget preparation and analysis, cost accounting, fund accounting, audit procedures, and tax compliance.   
  • Grants administration experience and knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to grants and contracts administration is required, in particular with government grant funding through the National Institute of Health (NIH). 
  • Significant experience with cost allocation methodologies. 
  • Familiarity with US Government negotiated indirect rates and methodologies preferred. 
  • Outstanding computer skills. Must be proficient with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Zoom. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels of an organization. 
  • Strong leadership skills with a dedication to driving and achieving results. 
  • Knowledge of employee relationship building and performance management techniques. 
  • Ability to be a team player; support and assist team members. 
  • Good judgment and decision-making capability. 
  • Must be a reliable and conscientious self-starter. 
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, building respect, consensus, and trust across reporting lines.
