JOB SUMMARY

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Sponsored Program Services (SPS), is actively recruiting for seasoned, progressive, and energetic Post-Award Grants and Contracts professionals to fill two supervisory positions in the administrative areas of Faculty Shared Services and centralized Post-Award Services.

Working under the general direction of an Assistant Director, the Grants and Contracts Managers (“Managers”) will provide day-to-day guidance to an assigned SPS team, and will have accountability for the quality of unit work, development of standards, prioritization of assignments, and the evaluation of unit output. These positions will be required to participate in the provision of unit services in an effort to maintain efficiency, but the primary function of the position rests in the supervision of team members and the services provided. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interpret award documents to ensure proper set up of accounts, and compliance with financial obligations.
  • Create/generate financial reports (i.e. monthly financial transaction reports) for analysis, projection, and action to assist with the management of sponsored projects.
  • Provide timely and accurate post-award transactional support for faculty research portfolios, including commitment management, cost transfers, and other grant-management-related tasks.
  • Assist with completion of administrative portions of progress reports to sponsors.
  • Serve as the University liaison with the sponsor in the negotiation of changes to sponsored research commitments, budget adjustments, changes in scope, and project extensions;
  • Provide direction, training, and assistance to principal investigators and department staff in financial award management.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to monitor and evaluate subrecipient entity activity and mitigate associated risk.
  • Serve as a resource to both internal and external colleagues.  Keep abreast of laws, regulations, external and internal policies, and procedures governing the administration of grants and contracts. 
  • Exercise sound judgment in clarifying and resolving issues of concern. 
  • Maintain complete records and documentation.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of workflow, current practices, business processes, and policy.
  • Participate in office-wide projects that ensure the institution is compliant with sponsor obligations and requirements;
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  2. At least six years of related experience.
  3. Extensive knowledge of federal regulations, sponsor guidelines, and the Federal Office of Management and Budget Uniform Guidance (2C.F.R. Part 200), as they relate to sponsored program activity.
  4. Excellent organizational and time-management skills, follow-through, and the ability to balance multiple priorities at once.
  5. Ability to work effectively within tight timelines and deadline pressure.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an emphasis on interpersonal skills requiring emotional intelligence.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively within a team and between teams, as well as constituents external to the centralized research administration office. 
  8. Considerable critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  9. Excellent computer skills, including spreadsheets and databases.
  10. Ability to develop and deliver technical training.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to the position.
  2. Experience working in higher education research administration.
  3. Supervisory experience and ability to plan, direct and evaluate the work of others.
  4. Evidence of soft leadership skills.
  5. Reputation for consistency in the proactive, satisfactory, and independent identification and resolution of problems or conflicts requiring tact, skill, and diplomacy. 
  6. Experience using InfoEd or similar.
  7. Knowledge of grant requirements for DOE, DOD, NSF, or NIH.
  8. Experience working collaboratively with faculty to advance their scientific endeavors.
  9. Strong financial skills.
  10. Experience working in a high volume, high production, and/or sponsored-research intensive environment.

APPOINTMENT TERMS 

These full-time positions include an excellent benefits package including medical and retirement, as well as employee and tuition waivers at the University of Connecticut.  Salaries typically start at the minimum of the salary band and range to the mid-point for progressively experienced candidates.  Positions are anticipated to be based on the main UConn Storrs Campus.  Employees are currently telecommuting until directed to return to campus or as an otherwise authorized condition of employment.
