SUMMARY: Grand Valley State University (GVSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to advance sponsored research and grant writing through engagement, collaboration, and innovation. Working closely with the Vice Provost for Research Administration, Academic leadership and university faculty, the Office of Research Compliance and Integrity, the Technology Commercialization Office, the Office of Finance & Administration, and other university staff, the Director will facilitate development of the Office of Sponsored Programs.
Essential Functions:
The successful candidate will work closely with CSCE leadership and units, university administration and faculty to:
- Design, lead and oversee the execution of a university-wide public and private grants program in keeping with the needs, priorities, and competencies of the institution and its faculty and staff
- Grow the university's external funding portfolio by designing a strategic approach to identify, cultivate, and disseminate funding opportunities, including strategic collaborative research opportunities
- Actively collaborate with members of the campus community to remain engaged and aware of interests and funding needs
- Collaborate with post-award staff for seamless project development to final completion of the grant life cycle
- Provide strong leadership to foster a highly collaborative environment supporting faculty and staff with pre-award, post-award, and compliance support
- Foster a positive, customer-focused culture with Office of Sponsored Programs staff to manage departmental operations
- Research and analyze regional, state, and national trends in funding priorities
- Develop, direct, and monitor processes for the review and timely submission of grant and contract proposals to funding agencies
- Work in cooperation with faculty, administrators and staff to develop campus-wide professional development opportunities to promote interest and the skills needed for pursing externally funded sponsored program opportunities
- Create opportunities to expand the campus, regional and national profile of GVSU through public-facing services and activities and promotion of department success, pre-award and post-award recognition and programs
Responsibilities:
- Actively collaborate with members of the campus community to remain engaged and aware of interests and funding needs; work in cooperation with faculty, administrators and staff to develop campus-wide professional development opportunities to promote interest and the skills needed to pursue externally funded sponsored program opportunities.
- Oversee and manage the GVSU Office of Sponsored Programs to ensure compliance with all federal administrative requirements and costing principles, state regulations, grantor restrictions, and university fiscal policies
- Oversee all aspects of proposal administration, sponsored program agreements, and contract negotiation with external agencies
- Assist senior administrators and principal investigators with issues related to externally-sponsored research activities and affiliated contractual requirements
- Collaborate with CSCE leadership and units to create a collaborative culture focused on supporting the research enterprise of GVSU
- Supervise and facilitate the growth of the OSP staff (AP and student)
- Serve as the Institutional Authorized Organizational Representative for submitting and administering grants with federal agencies
- Create and manage a university-wide database of grant awards and industry-sponsored contracts for monthly reporting to Provost, Deans, and Administration
- Coordinate and provide professional development activities to promote grant writing and external funding.
- Create and maintain systems for dissemination of information concerning external funding opportunities, application processes, compliance matters and other grants-related information.
- Coordinate and assist grant writers with the gathering of institutional data for grant submissions; coordinate external partnerships; and coordinate with other institutions regarding joint efforts for funding.

Required and Preferred Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Three years of institutional leadership experience with a demonstrated track record of success in increasing grant revenues.
- Two years of direct management experience to facilitate collaborative office culture and professional development of a team.
- Broad working knowledge of federal grant funding policies, regulations, agency guidelines, grant submission processes and platforms, pre-award and post-award management, compliance management, and reporting mechanisms.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, sound judgment, and experience handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, creatively and analytically.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams.
- Self-motivated and goal-oriented professional, with ability to manage multiple tasks with absolute deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to practice and adhere to organizational values of respect, integrity, self-motivation, conflict management, and collaboration.
Preferred:
- An advanced degree that demonstrates understanding/experience in scientific research
- Experience in CAYUSE or other automated grant administration tools.
- Active Certified Research Administrator (CRA) Certification or in study to exam within one (1) year.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate research for sound design and ethical implementation.
Salary: Commensurate with experience
