Health Sciences Administration Manager - Emergency Medicine

Overview

The Health Sciences Administration (HSA) Manager will provide administrative leadership, expertise, and operational direction for all research activities in the CHOC Children’s Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (ED) as they pertain to research needs, proposal development, implementation, infrastructure, financial management and growth. The CHOC ED conducts a range of Investigator-Initiated and collaborative research projects including randomized trials, survey collection, interventional cohort studies, retrospective chart reviews and big data analysis. Our research endeavors with regional partner institutions and national research networks go beyond trauma and injury prevention to include research related to social determinants of health and COVID-19 among others. The HSA Manager will supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of clinical research coordinators and other ED research personnel. In coordination with CHOC Children’s Research Institute leadership and the Medical Director of Emergency Medicine, the HSA Manager is responsible for leading, coordinating, and expanding CHOC ED research programs, extramural funding and publications in accordance with CHOC Children’s mission and the research goals and objectives. The HSA Manager will model excellence in the development, delivery, management, and oversight of research activities. The HSA Manager reports to the Director of Research Operations and is a member of the Research Institute leadership team.

 

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum one (1) year of research, demonstrating independence in research project/program execution must be represented in the minimum eight (8) years of combined post-baccalaureate research and management experience.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of combined post-baccalaureate research and research management experience.

Education

• Required: Bachelor’s degree in the health, behavioral or basic sciences from an accredited college or university.

• Preferred: PhD degree in the health, behavioral or basic sciences from an accredited college or university with at least 2-years of experience as a Principal Investigator and 4-years of research management experience post successful completion of a PhD degree. Concurrent Principal Investigator and research management experience will be considered if combined experience includes 2-years as a Principal Investigator and 4-years of research management experience. In addition to the PhD, an MBA in the health sciences is preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills to work with diverse groups of individuals, to effectively provide information, to make metric-based decisions, and to identify problems and develop feasible solutions. Intermediate or advanced computer, spreadsheet, and database skills. Demonstrated strength in building and articulating a vision and setting goals. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills to understand and anticipate the impact and opportunities across multiple critical projects. Experience presenting findings/recommendations to Executive level audiences.

• Preferred: Experience with LEAN Six Sigma process improvement in a healthcare/research setting. Experience working with RedCAP.
