Who we are looking for:
 

A high performing Sponsored Research Financial Manager to join our Finance department. The Sponsored Research Financial Manager will oversee, organize, and manage financial policies and procedures of ASCO’s sponsored research programs. The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring that appropriate costs are incorporated into budgets developed for ASCO research projects, research funders are invoiced appropriately, payments received are effectively documented, and budgets are monitored and updated.

This position is located in Alexandria, VA although remote candidates will be considered.

 

What you will do:
 

  • Assist with the pre-award preparation of budgets including providing guidance on the funder’s allowable and unallowable direct and indirect costs. Assure proposed budget is adequate to cover anticipated expenses and overhead. 
  • Establish a post-award process for financial documentation, implementation, and reporting of sponsored research program funds, including setting up projects in ERP, notifying staff of charge codes, managing financial processes associated with subcontracting for services on the research project, and coordinating funder invoicing and billing schedule.
  • Oversee and implement the process for ASCO to obtain and maintain a negotiated indirect cost rate agreement with the federal government.
  • Assist with setting up vendor records for subrecipients, vendors, and clinical sites, and assist with the receipt and documentation of subrecipient, vendor and site payments received and recognized, including resolution of any payment issues.
  • Conduct ongoing financial reporting for revenue and expenses of ASCO sponsored research programs preparing monthly/quarterly financial reports.
  • Monitor the revenues and expenditures for various funders of ASCO sponsored research programs to assure compliance with funder cost principles, terms and conditions of award, statement of work, and ASCO policies. Work with research team to assure funds are used appropriately and fully, and incorporate research team’s reports on progress, updated plans, and other changes into the budget.
  • Support all internal and external audit activities.

 

What you will need to be successful:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 – 7 years of experience within nonprofit accounting or sponsored research administration
  • Experience collaborating comfortably with non-financial researchers
  • Ability to apply logic and complex layers of rules to analyze and categorize complicated information, and recognize relationships between information in varied forms and from varied sources
  • Ability to attend to details, pursue quality in accomplishing tasks, and ensure all financial data is properly calculated and reported
  • Ability to adapt and incorporate changes to policies, funding arrangements, systems, and seeks to optimize processes
  • Displays an ongoing commitment to learning and self-improvement
  • Knowledge of fiscal procedures, principles, standards, rates, etc.
  • Ability to respond positively to change, embracing and using new practices or values to accomplish goals and solve problems

 

Ideal candidates will also contribute:

 

  • Experience with financial administration of sponsored research in an academic setting
  • Familiar with the setup of grants modules within enterprise resource planning software systems
  • Experience with various funders and federal grants
  • Current training in federal grants accounting
  • Demonstrated experience in accounting, auditing, budgeting, grants, or financial management
  • Certified Financial Research Administrator
     

ADA/Physical Requirements

  • Fast-paced office environment with extended periods seated or standing at a desk. 
  • High use of computer and other office technology equipment.

 

Travel

  • 1-5 days/yr.
