Job Description Summary

Support, coordinate, and implement activities in partnership with others in the Office of the Associate Vice President for Research Development as we work with colleges/schools, departments, research centers/institutes, shared facilities, and individual researchers on activities aimed at the growth and development of externally funded research programs. Envision, lead, coordinate, and implement events and programs in support of research development goals. Collaborate with, advise, and support researchers at all levels in proposal development activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. In collaboration with the Research Development team, envision, plan, implement, and lead development programs and events for faculty, department chairs and deans, center/institute/shared facility directors, and others seeking external funding for research, graduate student support, equipment, and other sponsored programs.
2. Develop and maintain online resources to assist the Michigan Tech community in finding sources of external funding, pursuing proposal development, and learning about the research environment at Michigan Tech.
3. Work collaboratively with the Research Development team to provide seamless advice, mentoring, and assistance in proposal development to constituents (e.g., faculty, staff, postdocs, administrators) at all career stages pursuing funding from all types of sponsors.
4. Collaborate on writing and/or editing of non-technical sections of proposals (e.g., budget justifications, management plans, institutional background, personnel documents).
5. Interpret and communicate funding agency requirements to help investigators understand and comply with sponsor requirements as part of the proposal development process.
6. Work collaboratively with the Sponsored Programs Office on pre-award activities and proposal submissions.
7. Work collaboratively with Research Development staff to maintain proposal records and electronic files, including administrative leadership for custom relationship management software.
8. Provide administrative coordination for internal research award programs (e.g., Research Excellence Fund), in coordination with other Associate VP for Research Development staff.
9. Coordinate research development marketing programs, including website administration, research story creation and publishing, and other tasks associated with promoting campus research, in coordination with University Marketing and Communications.
10. Occasional travel as needed for professional development and to meet relevant agencies, constituents, and external partners.
11. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
12. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience developing high-quality, technical written materials and making presentations that would be suitable for agency, foundation, corporate, and other potential research sponsors.
• Experience using personal computers and data management software.
• Advanced experience in Microsoft Word and Google collaboration tools.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience in proposal development for submission to Federal agencies, foundations, and corporations.
• Experience in graphic design and related software packages.
• Experience in customer relationship management software (e.g., Salesforce).
• Experience with university budget processes.
