Overview

Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position of Deputy Director Institute Administration (DDIA).  NKI is a facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health located in suburban Rockland County less than 30 minutes from New York City.  NKI has earned a national and international reputation for its landmark contributions in psychiatric research, especially in areas of psychopharmacological treatments for schizophrenia and major mood disorders, dementia research, clinical trials methodology, neuroimaging, therapeutic drug monitoring, and the application of computer technology to mental health services.  Since 1952, interdisciplinary teams of distinguished Research Scientists have applied their expertise to study the causes, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of severe and persistent mental illnesses.  NKI’s current research portfolio is broad but is primarily focus on major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and major neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.  NKI is academically affiliated with the New York University Grossman School of Medicine.  For further information about NKI, please visit the facility website at: https://www.nki.rfmh.org/

Salary:  $112,155 - $141,538 (Anticipated) (Plus $3,026 Location Pay)

Duties:

The Deputy Director Institute Administration (DDIA) serves as an essential member of the facility’s Executive Management Team.  Under the general direction of the Institute’s Executive Director, the DDIA is responsible for the day-to-day development and direction of NKI’s administrative management services (human resources, fiscal services, IT, sponsored programs, compliance) and plant and facilities.  The DDIA ensures that all research is carried out in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations, including but not limited to those governing human subjects’ protection; care and use of animals; biosafety; radiation safety; conflict of interest; and intellectual property.  The DDIA is responsible for preparing and monitoring the Institute’s annual budget and assures the plant and facilities are appropriate for the work to be conducted and directs the capital program to that end. Ideal candidate will have broad administrative experience and well-developed managerial skills with demonstrated experience in simultaneously managing multiple priorities across multiple projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Four (4) years of responsible management, administrative or supervisory experience in the health services field including one (1) year as manager of one or more of the following areas:  budget, fiscal, human resource management, affirmative action, information systems management, or support services in an academic medical center, research institute, or agency providing services to people diagnosed with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or mental retardation.

AND

Education:

A Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational standards in hospital, health care, public or business administration or a related field.

OR

Experience:

Six (6) years of the experience described above including two (2) years as a manager as described above.

AND

Education:

A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational standards.

Additionally, all candidates must be eligible to participate in Federal health care programs (e.g., Medicaid).  Individuals excluded from participation in these programs will not be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing federal (NIH, NSF), private, and industry grants and contracts preferred.  Ideal candidate will have pre- and post-award experience as either a department administrator in a research setting or as a member of a sponsored programs office. 
  • Knowledge of compliance issues impacting research. 
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal and state regulations governing research. 
  • Adept at budget preparation. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex organizational environment.
