Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a Phoenix-based nonprofit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life-changing results. TGen is affiliated with City of Hope, a world-renowned independent research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases located in Duarte, Calif. (CityofHope.org). This precision medicine affiliation enables both institutes to complement each other in research and patient care, with City of Hope providing a significant clinical setting to advance scientific discoveries made by TGen.
TGen’s mission in science education and community outreach is to educate, train and inspire the next generation of researchers and physicians and to increase the community’s working knowledge of genomics. Along those lines it offers Helios Scholars, a comprehensive summer internship program in biomedical research open to undergraduate, graduate and medical school students who have studied in Arizona; the Bioscience Leadership Academy, a two-week intensive education and leadership program serving 20 Arizona high school students every summer that focuses on elevating students' understanding of the biosciences and precision medicine; and numerous hands-on academic year internships in all areas of translational bioscience.
Today, the biomedical campus is an integral piece of the statewide bioscience initiative as the faculty contribute significantly to biomedical discoveries, the quality of health care for Arizona's residents, and the expansion and diversification of the state's economy.
TGen is a private 501(c)3 institution but receives state and federal funding. In addition, it pursues grant funding from private foundations, NSF, NIH and DOE.
