Maine Medical Center is seeking a Director of Research Grants in Scarborough. The Director Research Grants has overall strategic and operational responsibility for managing research grant funding for the MaineHealth system, the largest health system North of Boston.  The Director collaborates with our Academic Affairs Contracts Office and reports to the Vice President for Research for MaineHealth. The Director is responsible for growing a high-functioning, streamlined, compliant and user-friendly research grants office that minimizes risk to the institution and facilitates success in research grant funding and stewardship.  They will lead the grants team in identifying and communicating about funding opportunities, submitting grant proposals, negotiating and managing grant-related subcontracts, oversight of non-accounting post award management throughout the grant life-cycle, resolving grant management issues and serving as liaison to funders. The Director directs the creation of grant resources and website content and provides education and training on grants to MH investigators, communicating consistently, effectively and professionally with all stakeholders.

 

The Director manages research grant staff and works with others in leadership on the financial planning process regarding projection of research grant income. The Director will collaborate with Principal Investigators (PI’s), clinical service line leaders, financial planning, IRB, and others as needed. In addition, the Director creates and maintains relationships with funder staff, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the MH Grants Office, and other collaborators.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in appropriate fields (e.g., journalism, English, health policy).
  • At least seven years' progressive experience leading and supervising grant writing in a health or health-related field, with demonstrated ability to secure large grants and/or contracts from varied sources. Research experience strongly preferred.  Knowledge of and experience in all aspects of proposal development, writing, production, and post award management.
  • A demonstrated leadership, coaching and relationship management experience, and ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals and groups in developing and producing proposals.
  • Knowledge of biomedical research, public health and healthcare delivery systems, and current issues and trends
  • Knowledge of NIH, and other funders at the state and national levels, including foundations and government agencies; ability to initiate and maintain institutional registrations and privileges.
  • Knowledge of complex budgeting and cost allocation methodologies for research projects.
  • Ability to develop, or facilitate the development of, the conceptual framework for a proposal.
  • Ability to access – and assist others in accessing – information on potential sources of funding.
  • Ability to plan and deliver training sessions for diverse audiences on all aspects of grant writing.

 

Essential Functions

 

Leadership, Management and Collaboration:

  • Oversees the operation of the research grants office and the research grant portfolio, supervises grants staff.
  • Serves as institutional official to bind institution in grant submissions and to represent institution on post-submission and post-award grant matters; maintains institutional membership in federal electronic systems including sam.gov and grants.gov.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in accounting, contracting, compliance, clinical trials, development, and non-research grants to resolve grants issues, ensure consistency in process, and minimize institutional risk.
  • Works with research leadership to identify and analyze funding sources for major programs and initiatives.
  • Oversees multi-institutional and multi-department collaborative grant proposal projects; Develops and manages the approval process for grant submissions, updating process as needed to ensure a streamlined and efficient process.
  • Represents the research grants program to departments and local health systems throughout MaineHealth
  • Mentor young investigators on the research grant landscape and grantsmanship issues.

 

Proposal Development and Submission:

  • Identifies, reviews and disseminates funding opportunities, interprets guidelines for investigators and provides guidance on funding matches.
  • Manages proposal development process including writing/revising institutional templates, letters of support, budget justifications, biosketches; reviews all grant text for responsiveness and accuracy; approves and submits all research proposals.
  • Develops budgets and budget justifications, including complex multi-component budgets.
  • Works with collaborating institutions on proposal development.

 

Post-Award Management:

  • Reviews/approves grant agreements, drafts, negotiates and approves subawards; Manages/approves/submits prior approval requests, reports to funders, and troubleshoots issues that arise.
  • Manages federal subrecipient monitoring policy in collaboration with Research Accounting Manager.

 

Metrics and Data (Information Management):

  • Develops and oversees the management of systems, processes and tools to provide grant metrics and materials as needed.

 

Compliance:

  • Provides guidance on federal grant regulations; writes and revises policies to ensure compliance with federal rules.
  • Oversees process to ensures all investigators are compliant with IRB, IACUC and financial conflict of interest rules prior to activating grants and subawards.

 

Communications:

  • Oversees website content for research grants and develops online resources for investigators.
  • Identifies and disseminates information on grant opportunities.
  • Conducts outreach on use of tools for seeking funding opportunities, including use of NIH Reporter.
  • Conducts outreach throughout MaineHealth regarding the research grant proposal process and grantsmanship.
