About the Department:

OSP is responsible for establishing and nurturing a dynamic environment which maximizes external funding for research, scholarly, and creative pursuits while ensuring that the university’s financial, contractual, and regulatory exposures are minimized. OSP provides guidance and support to the university community in its research efforts and creates an administrative environment which fosters the creative process and ensures protection of the university’s financial and contractual obligations.

About the Position:

The Research Administration Training Manager position is part of the Research Administration team in OSP, which is responsible for systems management, reporting, training, and outreach. This position will manage all training and associated training tasks related to sponsored project administration. This position serves as the main point of contact for information and questions from the university community on training needs.
 

Responsibilities:

  • This position will develop, modify existing, and maintain to keep up-to-date written training materials, visual aids, manuals, guides, forms, videos, and presentations for research administration topics.
    • Ensures all training materials and related documents are prepared in a user-friendly, understandable, clear, concise, accessible, and visually appealing format, and are well-written and thoroughly proofed;
    • Ensures information is accurate, relevant, and consistent with all university, state, federal, and sponsor terms and guidelines for research administration, and continually updates materials accordingly as needed changes arise.
  • This position will develop, schedule, and deliver in-person, virtual, and prerecorded regular formal group training to the university community on research administration topics including pre-award and post-award management, compliance, and expenditure transactions.
    • Leverages technology to expand delivery platforms;
    • Reserves facilities, communicates available sessions, and maintains attendance and other records for purposes of reporting;
    • Consistently reviews participant training evaluations and learning outcomes to ensure training is useful and effective, and then revises as necessary based on feedback;
    • Maintains open office hours, responds to telephone calls and emails, and schedules one-on-one meetings as needed, serving as a resource for questions from the university community related to research administration.
  • This position will manage and coordinate the implementation, delivery, and materials for certificate programs related to research administration.
    • Develops new and updates existing curriculum, presentations, and training materials for certificate programs, and schedules, communicates, evaluates, and tracks participants for all sessions.
  • This position will maintain and update content and trainings on the OSP website and in the GMU online learning system to make available to the university community.
    • Promptly posts new and updated documents and information and removes content that is no longer current;
    • Maintains and sends relevant communications via university research administration listserv.
       

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field of study; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Training, presentation, and writing experience in a fiscal or business environment;
  • Ability to lead formal and informal individual, small, and large group trainings both in-person and virtually;
  • Ability to create new and revise existing training resources and materials;
  • Strong skills with video conferencing software, video editing software, Microsoft Word/Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and other presentation software, Adobe software, website management, and listserv management;
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, and strong organizational skills;
  • Strengths in collaboration and high-quality customer service;
  • Analytical, technical, and fiscal operations experience in a business, university, or sponsored programs environment, including the use of enterprise-wide systems;
  • Working knowledge of sponsored research administration and the ability to understand the effects of sponsored research policies and procedures on end-user operations and personnel.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Research Administrator;
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret/apply federal, state, and sponsor rules and regulations to sponsored project management.

  • A citizen of the United States;
  • A person who is a lawful permanent resident of the United States (a “Green Card” holder);
  • A person who is a “protected individual” as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a) (3); or
  • A person who is otherwise able to become generally eligible to receive unclassified technical data pursuant to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.
