Research Development Coordinator

Overview

Through a portfolio of administrative support and services, investment, unique research talent and capabilities, and world-class facilities, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) bolsters this research enterprise by helping faculty, staff, and students plan, perform, and commercialize groundbreaking research. OVPRI comprises research administrative support offices, including Sponsored Programs, Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance, Animal Resources and Care, Industry Partnerships and Foundation Relations, Technology Licensing, Export Control and Secure Research Compliance, and Electronic Research Administration. In addition, OVPRI is the home to five Virginia Tech world renowned research institutes, including the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, the Fralin Life Sciences Institute, the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, and the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment. The latter three institutes are a primary mechanism for investing in researchers across the Virginia Tech campuses, with a combination of unique shared facilities, seed grants, and student and faculty assistance.

The Research Development Coordinator will coordinate the University's programs and resources that support faculty pursuit of external sponsors for their research. In this new position, reporting to the VPRI and working with partners in colleges, institutes, and administrative offices across Virginia Tech, the Coordinator will be critical to meeting Virginia Tech strategic goals in growth of sponsored research activity. The Coordinator will develop, advertise, and support activities that position faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and students for future sponsored research opportunities, identify specific opportunities and build teams to respond to them, and support the development of large-scale proposals (including large transdisciplinary proposals) and projects based upon team science and scholarship.

The Coordinator will help position the university for future success in sponsored research programs. This includes developing and coordinating training and professional development for faculty and postdocs in areas including grant writing, team building, research program management, and identifying funding opportunities. It also includes promoting thought leadership and community building through sponsorship of seminars and workshops in priority areas.

The Coordinator will anticipate, identify, compile, and disseminate funding opportunities relevant to Virginia Tech faculty. Through coordination with the Office of Strategic Alliances and monitoring strategic priorities of sponsors, the Coordinator will support faculty and postdocs in their search and preparation for new funding opportunities. In addition, the Coordinator will provide support to the Offices of Strategic Alliances and Government Relations, and the Center for Advancing Partnerships (LINK) as they pursue major strategic partnerships with the federal government, industry, and private foundations.

The Coordinator will support faculty response to major funding opportunities, including through the management of the limited submission process. For major opportunities, the Coordinator will work with the VT Faculty Activity Support Team, the Associate Deans for Research, and the Office of Sponsored Programs to help build teams, identify partners, coordinate cost share (where applicable), and manage proposal development.
