Overview

Job Summary

The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC), Research Administration & Central Cervices reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR), and oversees Sponsored Programs, Marketing and Communication, Information Systems & Services (ISS), Business & Finance, and Human Resources. The AVC integrates administrative functions in the Office of Research and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the $650 million-per-year research enterprise. The AVC provides unit leaders with strategic guidance and operational support and is responsible for the coordination and integration of these programs across the organization to ensure responsiveness to the global research needs of UC Davis faculty, staff and students.

The AVC plays a key role in short-and-long range program planning strategies and systematically monitors and prioritizes goals to assist OR units and centers with achieving their mission and to ensure research activities are compliant with various regulatory agencies. The AVC oversees the enhancement of administrative procedures for contract and grant management and processing to expedite extramural fund access by principal investigators. The AVC provides direction to and ensures integrity and quality of customer service within operations management, human resources and organizational management. 

Department Description

The Office of Research (OR) serves as the catalyst for advancing the research mission at UC Davis. The OR oversees 41 research units, special research programs and projects, and central facilities with over 1,100 employees and annual expenditure and recharge income in excess of $210 Million. In addition, ORs portfolio includes 18 administrative units, the campus-wide Research Core Facilities Program, the Animal Use & Care Program, the Mouse Biology Program, and campus-wide research funding programs with $3.2 Million in annual funding.

Salary Range: $102,000-$266,100 (Annual), Salary Grade 28

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 or more years of experience providing leadership at an institution of comparable size and complexity.
  • Minimum five years experience working in the field of research administration.
  • Experience providing counsel and management support to a high-level executive, overseeing commitments, ensuring priorities are strategically managed and logistics are efficiently addressed in a highly dynamic, complex environment.
  • Minimum five years progressive experience managing and supervising large groups of staff and successfully managing multiple projects through others in a decentralized organization.
  • Leadership skills, including creativity and initiative, to conceptualize, plan and implement programs that support research, ensure accountability and compliance, and bring about consensus on sensitive issues.
  • Strategic planning and program evaluation experience to provide sound recommendations and examine work processes and organizational structures for development or revision to accommodate change requirements.
  • Team building skills to foster and promote a service-oriented team environment.
  • Experience using negotiation, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to establish effective working relationships and communicate project goals and opportunities to non-technical stakeholders and senior leaders, and to encourage and achieve consensus when issues involve multiple organizations and impact the institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline. Preferred fields of study include biological or medical science, engineering, or environmental sciences.
  • Experience improving the health and direction of an organization.
  • Skill to select, develop and implement a variety of direct and indirect strategies to influence desired outcomes.
  • Skills to provide leadership in emergency situations; determine appropriate response in order to provide continuous service to campus community
  • Knowledge of campus issues, policies, procedures and practices in the area of research.
