Research Development Program Director
Overview
ISLA’s (Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts) mission is to support and promote the research, scholarship, and creative endeavors of the faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Letters. The Research Development Program Director is specifically responsible for developing and maintaining programs that support faculty and student research.
• Organizes and supervises internal grant programs and provides assistance with the development and preparation of external grant applications.
• Provides both one-on-one and group-based services that assist faculty members in preparing and winning grants. This includes identifying and targeting specific grant opportunities, developing appropriate research teams, preparing competitive proposals, coordinating cost-sharing, and interpreting sponsor feedback.
• Provides direct grant-writing assistance through critiques of draft proposals; coordinates grant-writing workshops that promote strong writing skills, strategies, and grantsmanship; and assists with various aspects of grant-proposal preparation.
• Contributes to the College’s effort to improve the international reputation of the faculty by leading efforts to identify opportunities for external honorific recognition/awards and, were applicable, facilitating nomination processes.
• Develops and maintains strong relationships with program officers and managers at grant agencies and foundations, as well as with partners within Notre Dame, including the Office of Research, Office of Foundation Relations, and a variety of institutes, centers, and departments.
Minimum Qualifications
·• A Ph.D. in an arts, humanities, or social science discipline
• 3 years of experience developing, writing, evaluating, and/or managing successful research fellowships and grants.
• Familiarity with the range of agencies that support scholarship in the liberal arts (e.g., NSF, NEH, ACLS, Mellon, Guggenheim, residential fellowships)
• An intellectually active mind combined with an energetic, positive, and self-starting attitude.
• The ability to clearly and publicly articulate the value of scholarship in the arts, humanities, and social sciences at Notre Dame.
• The ability to work independently on multiple activities while remaining flexible so as to continually reprioritize activities in response to changing circumstances.
• Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including strong listening skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively both independently and in a collaborative environment.
• Consistent mindset of helping others reach their goals.
