Job Summary 

The Director of the Office of Sponsored Program (OSP) is responsible for the day-to-day operational oversight and management of central sponsored programs activities. The Director partners with the Office of Research & Innovation to assist faculty and staff in their efforts to submit, secure and fulfill extramurally funded sponsored programs. Fully committed to delivering best in class services, the OSP serves as the central coordination point for all grants and contracts, and partners with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies.

Essential Functions 

  • Leads, directs and oversees Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) in keeping with the needs and competencies of Drexel’s Office of Research & Innovation
  • Efforts range from implementing or modifying existing OSP protocols and procedures to increasing efficiency, overseeing the development and management processes for grants and contracts, and providing oversight in grant and sponsored program activities
  • Provides advice and guidance to faculty regarding potential funding opportunities and the application of grant-funding policies and regulations
  • Oversees the submission of proposals, which includes reviewing proposals to ensure they are in compliance with agency and university guidelines, securing internal approval for proposals, and submitting proposals
  • Participates with Office of Research & Innovation leadership in the development of policies to promote grants and contracts which support the University’s objectives
  • Creates and fosters an environment of support for the University research community by developing and implementing programs to increase external funding and contract support for faculty
  • Assists in the development of financial preparation of sponsored research activities and scholarly activities
  • Works closely with the Office of the Comptroller which is responsible for financial post-award administration
  • Administers and interprets applicable federal and state laws and regulations including agency guidelines for grants management and sponsored research including NASA, DOD NSF, US DOE, NIH, NEA and NEH and knowledge of Single Audit and the Uniform Guidance
  • Acts as a liaison between funding agencies and the University
  • Provides guidance and support to the staff during audit and work with other departments in addressing audit issues
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Research Systems & Analytics to oversee the maintenance and accuracy of sponsored programs databases
  • Works collaboratively with Director of Research Compliance to ensure export control, conflicts of interest & commitment, and other aspects of research
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the ORI to enhance research support services
  • Participates in professional conferences or meetings. Serves on appropriate University committees as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Five (5) years of experience directly supervising grants and contract staff, including planning, hiring, mentoring, evaluation, and management of staffing and performance issues
  • Certification in Research Administration
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of grants, legal and contract matters in a higher education research setting, which includes federal, state and private industry management rules and regulations governing sponsored programs, including Uniform Guidance and the Federal Acquisition Regulations
  • Experience analyzing contracts, legal documents and policies
  • Must have progressively responsible leadership experience in research administration, grants and contract central administration or the equivalent, and a broad working knowledge of federal grant funding policies
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills that would facilitate transactions with faculty and research administrators

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master's degree (MA/MS/MBA)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
