About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.

Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with twelve leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region and beyond, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university. They support our scientific mission by conducting independent research in areas of mutual interest to us and the wider scientific community.

Position Description

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Finance, the Senior Grants Accountant will be responsible for maintaining financial and compliance documentation with regards to federal awards, private grants, and NYGC Faculty startup funds subject to internal and external audits. The Senior Grants Accountant will collaborate closely with principal investigators, Sponsored Research and finance department staff to maintain timely, accurate financial and compliance data from various funding sources in NYGC’s different software applications. This role is ideal for someone with an accounting background that wants to grow knowledge and skills regarding general and non-profit accounting principles, as well as government compliance and sponsored research principles.

Key Responsibilities

Budget mainenence and data analysis

  • Maintaining accurate budget vs. actual reports for all funding sources currently available to NYGC Faculty;
  • Working with faculty to project future spending on various funding sources;
  • Assisting with development and implementation of more comprehensive time and effort tracking of company wide projects;
  • Producing ad hoc expenditure reports and data analyses;
  • Working with lab managers to streamline purchasing process as it relates to NYGC Faculty; and,
  • Maintaining IT Works database to ensure financial and compliance records match SAP general ledger; reconciling differences between the two databases.

Compliance

  • Assisting with assembling information needed for annual Single Audit;
  • Obtaining and updating effort certifications as required, and assisting with implementation of electronic certification system;
  • Assisting with preparing federal grant drawdown requests, and invoicing other grantors; and,
  • Reviewing purchase orders and invoices for compliance with grant/funding terms, and NYGC’s internal expense policies.

Financial Modeling and Reporting

  • Assisting with development and maintenance of a fee for service model -Specialized Service Facility (SSF) and annual cost analysis; and,
  • Assisting with preparation of annual Indirect Cost Proposal.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in a business subject (e.g. accounting, finance, economics) required;
  • At least two years’ of related experience required;
  • Experience in higher education or non-profit organization desirable;
  • Must have the ability to utilize sound fiscal accounting practices and procedures to account for receipt of grant funding and prepare necessary reports;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to establish priorities, work under pressure, and exercise independent judgment and discretion;
  • Ability to react quickly and effectively to other inquiries from a variety of management levels with comprehensive and accurate information in a wide variety of contexts and changing priorities;
  • Must be detail oriented and possess quantitative skills with proficiency in analyzing spreadsheets using Excel; and,
  • Must have strong proficiency with MS Office.
