Position Summary:

Campbell University is a leading private university in North Carolina with over 130 years of rich history. We are centrally located, 30 miles south of Raleigh, and close to the prestigious Research Triangle Region which facilitates excellent academic and professional interactions for our students and faculty.  Our enrollment of over 6,000 students consists of approximately 4,200 undergraduate, and 2,200 graduate students from all 50 states and 35 countries.  Our schools include the College of Arts and Sciences,  Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, School of Education, Divinity School, the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, the School of Osteopathic Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Engineering, Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, and School of Adult and Online Education that includes extended campus locations in downtown Raleigh, Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejeune.

The Office of Sponsored Research and Programs (OSRP) at Campbell University serves as the primary source of assistance and oversight for faculty and staff seeking external grant funding, and exists to facilitate successful grant processing while also ensuring compliance with all University, federal, and other applicable policies and procedures.

The Director of Sponsored Research and Programs provides oversight and vision, consistent with the university mission, on all matters related to sponsored research and programs including development and administration. Reporting to the Assistant Provost for Administration, the Director provides overall leadership to facilitate, enhance, and grow sponsored programs across the University.  The incumbent also manages coordination and implementation of state and federal policies pertaining to research and sponsored programs, designs and administers internal policies and procedures relevant to the research environment to effect compliance with sponsor requirements, and assures effective and timely management of university research and sponsored programs awards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs to serve as a clearinghouse for all university grants and grant-related activities from discovery through close of award, and all stages in between.
  • Identify potential grant sources from federal, state, and local agencies, companies, foundations, and other sources to support faculty research, training, professional development, as well as departmental, school/college, and university projects.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop campus-wide professional development opportunities to promote interest in, and the skills needed for pursuing, externally funded sponsored program opportunities.
  • Develop and, after approval, implement university grant policies and procedures.
  • Provide oversight of the administration and fiscal management of awarded grants and contracts to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, contractual terms, and other requirements of the externally funded activities.
  • Supervise the management of funded research projects and track salary funding, payroll, as well as time and effort reporting.
  • Support the purchasing function for research by supervising the procedures to ensure budget authority and compliance with Uniform Guidance as well as any other agency specifications.
  • Review grant accounting activities, coordinate preparation of monthly and other financial reports for all research accounts, and ensure that funds are reconciled as necessary.
  • Support principal investigators in addressing research-related financial matters as necessary.
  • Uphold, and abide by, Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to: Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

Education/Experience: 

  • Master’s degree required, doctoral degree in a relevant field desirable.
  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field desirable.
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) desirable.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience facilitating sponsored projects, contracts, cooperative agreements, and grant administration in a higher education environment.
  • Broad working knowledge of federal grant funding policies, submissions, pre-award, and post-award grants management.
  • Experience in compliance management and a broad understanding of regulations related to grants.  Expert knowledge of federal circulars, uniform guidance and regulations relevant to sponsored programs and research administration compliance.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, Grants.gov, NSF FastLane/Research.gov, ERA Commons/ASSIST, and other online proposal submission and reporting mechanisms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated success working effectively with a diverse pool of principal investigators, faculty and senior campus leadership, as well as a broad range of other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, and display a positive attitude, tact, courtesy and discretion in dealings with faculty, staff, high level university officials and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet strict deadlines, and pay attention to detail.
  • Strong financial, audit, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point.
