The Communications Specialist at the Johns Hopkins University Research Administration (JHURA) office will develop strategy and content to promote research administration outreach and training and to help advance JHURA's mission, working to fulfill existing communications needs and meet increasing new ones associated with JHURA and the university as a whole. The communications specialist would focus mainly on aspects of the communications and outreach efforts of JHURA work related to existing and changing sponsor and university policies; faculty and staff outreach; and engagement of the research community while supporting the research enterprise of the university.

 

Reporting to the Sr. Administrative Manager and working closely with colleagues in JHURA and across the university, the communications specialist will generate and execute story ideas and messaging, create, edit, implement and maintain content for the web, multimedia projects, and print materials.

 

The communications specialist will be tasked with using creative and analytical skills and judgment to accomplish the following primary responsibilities:

 

Communications/Outreach:

 

• Develop and implement a set of strategic messages about research and JHURA, to be used widely and consistently in conjunction with key messaging regarding performance, customer service, outreach and effective compliance with sponsor and university policies.

• Create vision statements and project-specific proposals for research administration initiatives.

• Develop and maintain content for the JHURA website.

• Assess and develop strategy and content for use via social media such as Facebook and Twitter, working to maximize the use of such media for communications and outreach needs.

• Work as a liaison with other university offices, including the Vice Provost for Research and Research Development Team to build a bank of communications materials for faculty, staff and students.

 

• Create monthly JHURA newsletter and annual Research Report.

• Write materials for the web and other communication vehicles (including in-person events and JHURA News) and coordinate, attend and staff events. The events will cover a wide array of sponsored projects topics for both internal and external audiences.

• Develop, coordinate and carry out presentations and outreach (oral and written) for JHURA and sponsor policies/procedures.

• In collaboration with dept. leadership produce podcasts and other materials for training and outreach.

 

Administration:

 

• Assist in creating standard operating process documents.

• Develop tools to measure the effectiveness and ROI on events.

• Identify needs and opportunities as well as manage daily work and responsibilities.

• Coordinate logistics for outreach events.

• Maintain departmental shared calendars and email listservs.

 

Qualifications

 

• A Bachelor's degree in related field and a minimum of two years related experience in marketing communications, journalism, or writing required.

• Master's degree preferred.

• Demonstrated experience in writing for the web and using social media for optimal audience engagement experience.

• Research administration experience in a university setting and knowledge of current issues in sponsored projects strongly preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

• Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to develop materials, construct messaging, and communicate effectively with a wide range of constituents on diverse topics.

• Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships and assess and meet diverse client needs.

• Ability to organize workflow, prioritize and manage multiple projects with minimal direction, meet deadlines, think critically, and exercise good judgment. Must be proficient with WordPress, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Mailchimp and social media platforms.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
