Sr. Financial Analyst (Research Accounting)

Being part of the Research Accounting team at SBP means you are directly involved in supporting our Faculty and scientific staff with managing their funds appropriately.  The Research Accounting team partners with faculty to provide financial planning and analysis along with compliance management to ensure that sponsored research projects are managed according to institutional and sponsor policy requirements. This is critical work so that our scientists can best leverage their resources toward medical discoveries. 

The Senior Research Analyst is responsible for offering a high-level of customer service and exceptional research accounting and analytical expertise to support established faculty, department staff and agency sponsor representatives in all matters pertaining to the fiscal accounting of research awards.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Sets up accounts and budgets for awarded sponsored research projects and Institute funded accounts related to assigned established faculty portfolios
  • Performs bi-weekly review of effort allocations; allocate lab FTE effort to appropriate funding sources in partnership with faculty and in accordance with the awarding agency terms and conditions; reviews and reconcile exceptions reports for variances and discrepancies and identifies and tracks key personnel effort allocations to maintain compliance with award guidelines
  • Determines eligibility and prepares cost transfers in accordance with Uniform Guidance and Institute policy
  • Reviews and approves monthly purchasing card expense reports and check reimbursement requests to determine allowability and allocability of costs incurred; provides guidance to faculty on allocation of costs in accordance with Uniform Guidance and the ISA policy of the Institute
  • Prepares and ensures the accuracy and integrity of various financial and research performance progress reports and forms relevant to faculty portfolios in compliance with sponsor guidelines
  • Performs budget and expense reviews and facilitates cost reimbursement invoices for subawards including the billing and collection of receivable balances
  • Forecasts the financial trends of faculty funding; provides financial planning by developing and implementing fiscal strategies to manage lab operations and minimize risk to the portfolio and Institute
  • Independently conducts meetings with faculty to present financial projections and provide financial recommendations
  • Tests report specifications and functionality for accuracy
  • Reviews and distributes faculty financial reports
  • Assists other Research Accounting Analysts with day to day functions and acts as a mentor for compliance issues related to NIH, SBP and Uniform Guidance policies and practices
  • Provides recommendations to management for executing operational improvements to enhance processes and customer satisfaction

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and four years’ directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained is required
  • Experience with federal and non-federal accounting policies for extramural research awards and administration is required
  • Experience with financial management of high volume multiple, large collaborative research projects and contracts is required
  • Experience in financial forecasting, analysis, and budgeting in a complex operating environment is required
