Managing Director Division of Research

Oakland, California

 

In this role, you will lead and direct the operations of The Permanente Medical Group’s Division of Research, one of the largest non-academic research organizations in the nation, with 600 employees and an annual budget of approximately $100 million. You will determine research operational goals and priorities with the Regional Research Director and The Permanente Medical Group and Kaiser Foundation Hospital Executives. You will also develop national and regional research strategies, drive administrative processes, and integrates service, efficiency, and organizational improvements aimed at positioning the Northern California region to be the market leader in high quality epidemiological research, health services research, and clinical trials. In addition, you will serve as the division’s research regulatory and compliance leader.

 

Qualifications Include:

  • At least eight years of general management experience in a complex, multi-faceted research and health care setting
  • At least five years of supervisory experience in such areas as training, employee development/assessment and disciplinary actions
  • At least five years of experience in financial management, program development, budget development and monitoring, and quality process and operations improvement
  • A master’s degree in business administration, health care administration, public health, public health administration, health policy and management, a related discipline, or six years of experience in a directly related field with a high school diploma or GED
  • A seasoned leader who has been responsible for leading an organization of comparable size and complexity
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with the DOR Director and other leaders within The Permanente Medical Group and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan to establish mutual operational performance measures
  • The demonstrated ability to determine the key operational issues and develop appropriate action plans from multi-disciplinary perspectives
  • Proven leadership skills in managing diverse teams of professional staff
  • Proficient in team building, group interaction, with demonstrated ability to lead professionals and manage others through influence and collaboration
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Significant knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations related to conducting research
  • Excellent skills in complex analytic problem solving and change management
  • The ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment

 

Preferred Qualifications Include:

  • Research administration experience
  • PhD, J.D., or eight years of experience in public health, health policy, and management, or a related discipline
  • Strong comprehension of general business processes and systems
  • The ability to translate senior leadership priorities into a cohesive strategic plan
  • Expertise in developing and managing research grant funding, contracting, and administration processes
  • Knowledge of and experience in research financial and contract management, regulatory, and reporting requirements
