The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking candidates who have the ability and experience to contribute in meaningful ways to the global engagement of the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee.  The Center for International Education (CIE) is seeking a Director for Global Research and Innovation Development who brings a track record of excellence in this important arena. At a time of robust innovation of knowledge and science UT-Knoxville offers an exciting opportunity to work within higher education in the global space of education and research.

General Description

Reporting to the vice provost for international affairs, the director plays a critical role in successfully building and connecting the global research portfolio to the fabric of the University. The director supports the identification and development of new international opportunities to leverage external income, produce high-impact outputs, and raise the University's global research reputation. The director is a member of the CIE executive committee and works with the vice provost to develop and implement an international vision and strategic plan for the CIE and UT-Knoxville. The director is responsible for leadership and management of the department of Global Research and Innovation Development in the Center for International Education (CIE).

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Direct staff members in activities to support grant writing, proposal budgeting, and data analytics for global research funding opportunities.

• Diversify funding streams to support international research to increase UT’s global and domestic research portfolio.

• Collaborate with Office of Research & Engagement to increase external funding for research.

• Develop comprehensive partnerships with core donor organizations and scholarly partners, national funding agencies, foundations, corporations, UT alumni, universities (U.S. and international), ministries, internal funding to facilitate mobility and   collaboration.

• Develop partnerships with a range of relevant overseas public research funders who support international collaboration.

• Build institutional connections across the UT System and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop and implement global engagement strategies that drive campus strategy across disciplines and activity.

• Connect with the other work units in CIE to integrate global research with programs abroad, international students and scholars, and opportunities to build programming in the English Language Institute.

• Collaborate with data science specialists to develop a data analysis model that will inform the campus community and external stakeholders of the impact of global research.

• Provide regular communication to the media relations team.

• Partner with UTK Development, including the Corporate and Foundations relations, and UT Alumni.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• Master’s Degree and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience working within global research and innovation, preferably affiliated with higher education.

• Substantial experience working through the grant and proposal funding process.

• Evidence of creating a vision and developing and executing a strategy, resulting in concrete deliverables and competitive advantages.

• A successful record of growing networking operations with transdisciplinary internal and external stakeholders.

• Experience working in conjunction with senior leadership to develop and implement a funding model to scale-up projects in receipt of smaller pump-priming or partnering awards.

• Demonstrated success driving innovation and industry engagement.

• Flexibility to meet emerging organizational needs as it relates to research change agenda.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.

• Excellent relationship management and stakeholder management skills to develop effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and with proven capability to represent UTK in academic and scientific circles.

• Solid understanding of global research environment trends, challenges, initiatives and opportunities, and donor agency agendas in the higher education sector.

• Proven knowledge of strategic planning processes and the ability to devise communications strategies.

• Ability to deliver strategic results

• Ability to inspire colleagues while driving the continuing development of our unique culture of collegiality and innovation.
