VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Overview

Louisiana State University (LSU), the flagship institution of the state, seeks an innovative and experienced leader to assume the position of Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Providing the vision to define and the experience to execute major initiatives addressing problems from the local to the global in scale, the successful candidate is charged with growing the University infrastructure and funding which support research and creative activity, and expanding the impacts of the innovation ecosystem, bringing the institutional profile to new heights.

LSU is a Land-, Sea-, and Space-grant flagship public institution with a tremendous statewide research network, international research collaborations, and significant downstream effects of research, creative and scholarly work spanning worldwide needs and interests. Current institutional focal areas of excellence include Coastal Sustainability and Environment; Conventional and Renewable Energy; Materials Science and Manufacturing; Biological, Biotechnology, and Biomedical Research; Individual Behavior and Community Context; Core Computing and High-Performance Computing; and Communication and Expression. The Vice President for Research and Economic Development will foster an institutional culture promoting convergent research practices that will expand the salutary influences of basic and applied scholarly efforts in these areas for the sake of knowledge creation and the betterment of the human condition.

As the Chief Research Officer for the flagship LSU campus, the Vice President oversees the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research Advancement, Office of Innovation & Technology Commercialization, Council on Research, and 14 centers and institutes. LSU has major research capabilities including extensive high-performance computing capacity in the Center for Computation and Technology, a synchrotron light source at the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices, state of the art coastal research facilities, and a strong collaborative integration with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Observatory (LIGO), the scientific breakthroughs from which were recently recognized with a Nobel Prize. LSU is affiliated with many other cooperative centers, institutes, and research programs across the world. The Vice President supervises all faculty and staff reporting to the Office of Research & Economic Development and reports to the Executive Vice President & Provost.

 

About LSU:

LSU comprises eight campuses stretching across Louisiana and includes more than 50,000 students and research expenditures amounting to $360 million. Within LSU are two health sciences centers offering various levels of degrees in medicine, dentistry, allied health, nursing, public health, and graduate studies. The LSU Agricultural Center encompasses both extension responsibilities and agricultural research. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a premier research institute specializing in chronic disease, diabetes, and obesity. LSU-Shreveport offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level, and has an emerging online presence. LSU-Alexandria is a four-year institution serving the central region of the state. LSU-Eunice is a junior college offering degrees and certificates in health, business, and liberal arts.

LSU’s flagship campus, located in the state capital of Baton Rouge, is Louisiana’s premier public institution. It has an enrollment of approximately 32,000 students studying in nearly 200 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and specialist programs. The flagship campus includes the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and the state’s only School of Veterinary Medicine. There are more than 5,000 employees with a budget of more than $1 billion on the flagship campus.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Stimulates excellence in research, scholarship, and creative activities across LSU by providing vision, insight, and leadership.
  2. Formulates, improves, and implements LSU’s overall research strategic plan through engagement with senior management as well as academic deans and faculty.
  3. Provides research leadership throughout the State of Louisiana by developing excellent relationships with University stakeholders, including government, business, and industry leaders at all levels of the education, arts, scientific, and cultural communities, as well as with LSU faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
  4. Nurtures successful partnerships with the city and state in a broad range of economic development activities.
  5. Interfaces with federal, state, and private research funding agencies.
  6. Advocates for and advertises LSU research to the general public and national and international associations.
  7. Oversees ORED’s participation and representation in state and national organizations focused on the role of higher education in economic development.
  8. Promotes and facilitates research and scholarship.
  9. Promotes and facilitates technology transfer and economic development by developing relationships with industry.
  10. Affirms the integrity of all research processes, maintains awareness of national and international activities regarding research policy, and ensures compliance with international, federal, and state laws and institutional regulations.
  11. Establishes regional, national, and international cooperative research ventures.
  12. Guides LSU in defining, prioritizing, and catalyzing emerging research opportunities.

 

Position Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess: a terminal degree and will be eligible for the rank of Professor in a discipline on the LSU campus; administrative experience managing people, overseeing a budget, and leading initiatives; demonstrated success in research and in obtaining competitive external funding.  Desired qualifications are experience with initiatives across different disciplines, have obtained funding from a diverse portfolio of sources, and experience with broadening participation in research.
