Position Summary

The Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Research Specialist (Natural Sciences) to join the Shimamura lab.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts experiments according to established research protocols for multiple projects simultaneously.  
  • Collects, reviews, and analyzes individually- and team-generated data.  
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains the organization of research equipment and research lab spaces.  
  • Assist the laboratory manager with placing orders and tracking inventory levels. 
  • Documents results for presentations including external conferences and internal lab meetings. 
  • Provides training and operational guidance on day-to-day activities for laboratory student workers. 
  • Performs literature reviews and writes reports/co-authors scientific papers for presentations and publications. 
  • Work some (minimal) extended hours or on weekends when needed.  
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field required. Master’s degree in science preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
  • Proficient in specific lab research techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Requires B.A./B.S. in Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, or related area. 
  • Minimum of 2 years of wet lab/bench experience in academic research setting. 
    • Preferred knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques such as western blotting and PCR  
  • Ability to work hands-on with mice and mammalian model systems. 
    • Preferred experience with orthotopic/GEMM animal models
  • Salary based on experience.
