Institutional Relations Advisor, Government Grants

The American Heart Association is seeking its next member of the Government Grants and Initiatives team to grow the Association’s externally funded research and programmatic initiatives at a pivotal point in its history. As the Association moves into its second century of impact, we are centering our government grants strategy for the greatest impact toward achieving our mission. The Advisor, Government Grants position offers an inspiring and rewarding opportunity to partner with the Association’s science and program leaders in this exciting endeavor!

The position is 100% home-based.

Responsibilities

The Advisor, Government Grants, will collaborate with the Association’s leaders and external collaborators to conceptualize, develop, and submit grant proposals. This position is responsible for identifying, managing, and submitting a portfolio of significant and large-scale government grant proposals to agencies that include NIH, CDC, NSF, ARPA-H, and PCORI. The Advisor will connect experts, programs, and other resources to write and submit competitive grant proposals.

Essential Duties:

  • Leading proposal development and project management for a portfolio of government grant submissions in collaboration with principal investigators and program directors.

  • Writing proposals that are responsive to government funders, well-written, compelling, and consistent with the strategic direction of the Association.

  • Conducting research on prospective government grant opportunities and continually building an understanding of the government funding landscape.

  • Developing a depth of mission knowledge and insight needed to effectively identify appropriate government grant opportunities and connect them to the Association’s programs and funding priorities.

  • Working with the Office of Funded Programs, Legal and Finance to ensure secured grants smoothly transition to the post-award phase.

  • Recording all activity in Salesforce CRM and the GMS, and provides regular progress reporting as requested.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or relevant experience.

  • At least 3 years of experience developing and writing government grant proposals, preferably at the federal level.

  • Ability to lead teams without being a subject matter expert.

  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously.

  • Experience building programmatic and/or research budgets.

  • Knowledge of government grant regulations and application processes.

  • Excellent writing and strong verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in coordinating complex proposal submissions with multiple institutions, investigators, and disciplines preferred.

  • Demonstrated program design experience.

  • Knowledge of government agency priorities and agendas.

  • Experience and knowledge of public health initiatives.
